Background

Nagoya Institute of Technology is fortunate to be in the prosperous Chukyo area of Japan--home of the largest number of ceramics-based research institutes and companies in the world.

We have achieved excellent results in wide-ranging fields from basic to applied ceramics, while graduating well-trained researchers and engineers and we have been designated as the ceramics science and research center in the 21st century Center of Excellence (COE) Program.

Based on these achievements and our strengths in research and education, in January 2007 we established the Institute of Ceramics Research and Education (ICRE). ICRE includes the Advanced Ceramics Research Department and the Ceramics COE Education Department. The faculty is made up of a coalition of researchers from international and domestic institutes in addition to our teachers. We conduct research in cooperation with the international and domestic partner institutes. Our significant areas of research are: energy materials, environmentally harmonious materials, bio- materials and next-generation materials based on ceramic science.

As the center of international academic collaboration and industry-school-government coalition, we plan and organize international collaborative research and develop young researchers with in-depth expertise and wide-ranging international ability.

The objectives

Develop basic science that enables structure design and morphology control at atom/molecule scale.

Advance ceramics as a science, since it is frequently thought that ceramic production is ahead of the research in ceramic science.

Further the basic science in synergy with technique.

Establish an international ceramics network.

Educate young researchers in cooperation with partner institutes to become the world’s top-level researchers with in-depth special knowledge, practical research ability and a broad international point of view, through:

  • International collaborative research in the material science field related to energy, the environment and biotechnology.
  • International exchange of young researchers engaging in practical research and educational activities.
  • Activities such as international conferences and summer schools.

Our Partners:

The international partner institutes are in Europe where ceramic education is well systematized. They are Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle (ENSCI), Limoges University in France, Imperial College London in the UK, University of Erlangen-Nurnberg in Germany. We have exchanged students and achieved excellent results in collaborative research with them.

International Coalition of Institutes System

The goals

・International collaborative ceramics science research

The significant research will lead to the solution of problems related to energy, the environment and natural resources. Young researchers will initiate the research. We will develop new research while enhancing the existing collaborative research with the partner institutes.

・Exchange young researchers

We will exchange young researchers with the partner institutes to enhance collaborative research. Young researchers will be instructed and advised in their research at the institute to which they have been sent.

・International activities

A regular international conference will be held to develop proposals for collaborative research and to foster international ability in young researchers.
We will fulfill our role as the base of international interactions.

・The International Young Ceramist Lab has been established and will function as a program in which young researchers can conduct international workshops and seminars and create opportunities to advance research and international experience.

International Coalition of Institutes System
An Educational Plan for Graduate Students

The operation system

We are guided by a planning and steering committee made up of teaching professors from ICRE and an international conference committee made up of teaching professors from ICRE and our partner institutes. We have an international committee that advises and assesses young researchers Eacademic and research activities while studying abroad.
